I still find all of the characters delightful. There are also some good twists in the story that I didn’t see coming and I was a little worried that the world was going to end but it was a very satisfying ending. It was perhaps a little slower paced, and a little darker than the others, but still a really good read. This fourth and supposedly final book in the series was just as good as the others. Maybe Charlie? I don’t think it matters, I still really like them. I’m not sure who the character is on the cover of The Dire King, I don’t think it is Jackaby or the Dire King either. If you look closely you can see that each book has a different character as the portrait. I want to start off with a comment about the covers. Before the four can think about their own futures, they will have to defeat an evil that wants to destroy the future altogether. At the same time, the romance between Abigail and the shape-shifting police detective Charlie Cane deepens, and Jackaby’s resistance to his feelings for 926 Augur Lane’s ghostly lady, Jenny, begins to give way. Jackaby and Abigail are caught in the middle as they continue to solve the daily mysteries of New Fiddleham, New England - like who’s created the rend between the worlds, how to close it, and why zombies are appearing around. An evil king is turning ancient tensions into modern strife, using a blend of magic and technology to push Earth and the Otherworld into a mortal competition.
